Dear Editor,

Recent survey data released that measured public support for smoke-free workplaces indicates that 70% of Hoosiers are in favor of making workplaces like bars, clubs, and casinos smoke-free. An article about this survey appeared in the Vincennes Sun Commercial.

The benefits of smoke-free workplaces are numerous. Those who are exposed to secondhand smoke at their workplace can suffer from health conditions such as lung cancer, nasal irritation, stroke, and coronary heart disease. Research has shown that exposure to secondhand smoke is simply not safe.

Now more than ever before, the health of our workers is vitally important. Having a healthy workforce is vital to our community, county, and nation. As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, making sure that workers are safe on the job has become a top priority. While we know that making sure proper measures such as mask wearing, social distancing, and disinfecting are extremely important, let’s not forget about the air our workers are breathing. It is vital that workers are breathing in air that is not being compromised by the over 7,000 chemicals that come from a burning cigarette.

Whether it’s a global respiratory virus or worker’s health, now is the time to go smoke-free.

Smoke-free air — we need it!
