City offices, health department to be closed on Monday

All Vincennes city offices will be closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Monday’s recycling will be postponed until Jan. 24. Trash service for the week will not be affected.

The Knox County Health Department, the local site for COVID-19 vaccinations, will also be closed Monday in observance of the holiday.

The Knox County Courthouse will also be closed.

Pace to partner with IU fellowship program

Pace Community Action Agency operates a weatherization program dedicated to addressing energy conservation in homes, one that works with low-income families to complete non-emergency, energy saving measures such as adding insulation and cleaning and replacing furnaces. And for the first time, Pace will partner with the Environmental Resilience Institute to bring a McKinney Climate Fellow to southwestern Indiana.

The McKinney Climate Fellows program, a part of the McKinney Midwest Climate Project, is seeking applicants for its summer 2022 program. The McKinney Climate Fellows program places highly-qualified graduate and undergraduate students into fellowships with local governments, corporations and nonprofits all over Indiana, focused on creating and implementing climate and sustainability initiatives.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until Feb. 14; the Fellows program will select the finalists.

Good Samaritan offering free BMI screenings this month

Good Samaritan Community Health Services is looking to help those wanting to start the new year focusing on health by offering free BMI screenings throughout the month of January.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is an approximate measure of body fat based on a person’s height and weight. This screening method is an easy way to define if a person is underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese.

The free screenings are as follows:

Jan. 12, Goodwill in Vincennes, 12:30-2 p.m.

Jan. 13, Odon Senior Center, Odon, 1:30-3 p.m.

Jan. 25, Fox Ridge Manor in Vincennes, 9:30-11 a.m.

Jan. 26, Petersburg Senior Center, Petersburg, noon to 1:30 p.m.

Blue Jean Center to host Sunday brunch

The Blue Jean Community Center in Monroe City will host a brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The menu includes biscuits and gravy, baked apple French toast, bacon, scrambled eggs and fruit.

The cost per meal is $10, and all proceeds go to keeping the center open.

Eat in or carry out are available.

Pace providing free access to birth control this month

Pace Health Connection, a program with Pace Community Action Agency Inc., this month is offering a clinic where women can have an IUD placed by a licensed healthcare provider at no cost.

The month-long promotion is available regardless of insurance status and is offering women the opportunity save money not only on the IUD, Pace officials said in a press release issued last month, but also in the cost of having to purchase other forms of birth control over the five-year period.

Quiz Bowl set for next month

The annual Quiz Bowl, sponsored by Kiwanis and WZDM, will be held at 9 a.m. on Feb. 19 at the Fortnightly Clubhouse, 421 N. Sixth St. Four member teams will engage in a double elimination contest. All teams’ $150 entry fee will directly benefit the Knox County early education programs sponsored by Kiwanis.
