USS Indianapolis dedication on Saturday
At 11 a.m. on Saturday the Indiana Military Museum, 715 S. Sixth St., will dedicate the USS Indianapolis SSN-697, a nuclear submarine monument new to the grounds of the museum.
The ceremony will represent the conclusion of a 6-year effort to bring the Indianapolis’ remains to Vincennes as a memorial to the nearly 700 veterans who served on it as well as the many who served on two previous ships with the same name.
Following the ceremony and dedication, museum officials are inviting local residents to a luncheon at Vincennes University’s Robert E. Green Activities Center. Set to begin at 12:30 p.m., the ship’s former captain, William J. Toti, will serve as guest speaker. Tickets are available through the Hoosier Base USS VI Sub Vets Association and can be reserved by calling 812-847-9070.
Second Sunday Nature Exploration Walk this Sunday
Ouabache Trails Park, 3500 N. Lower Fort Knox Road, is home to a number of fern species with a surprising variety of forms. Learn to recognize the ferns in the park, and learn more about ferns in general, during the Fern Foray on Sunday.
Meet local naturalist Terri Talarek King at 2 p.m. at the Sacajawea Shelterhouse at the back of the park's lower loop road to begin the Foray. The walk is planned for lower and upper Trail 7. If that trail is not accessible, the walk will start on Trail 6 and continue on other trails. Participants should be prepared for muddy or wet areas, as well as slopes. Magnifying lenses are good to bring, also.
The Fern Foray is part of the Second Sunday Nature Exploration Walk series for 2019, all at Ouabache Trails Park. The walks are free and do not require registration. All ages are welcome, and families encouraged.
