Reactions to Wednesday’s breech of the U.S. Capitol (which is believed to be the first time since the War of 1812), as Congress assembled to begin debate on the certification of electoral college results:

• President Donald Trump, after several figures called on him to address his supporters, said in a video, “We had an election that was stolen from us...but you have to go home now. We have to have peace. We don’t want anybody hurt...This was a fraudulent election but we can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. We love you, you’re very special...I know how you feel, but go home, and go home in peace.”

• Minutes before the president’s video, President-elect Joe Biden in a video called upon Trump to “go on national television now to fulfill his oath and defend the constitution and demand an end to this siege.” In his address, Biden said “the scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not reflect true America, do not reflect who we are. This is not dissent, this is disorder. It’s chaos, it borders on sedition and it must end now. I call on this mob to pull back and allow the word of democracy to go forward.”

• Vice President Mike Pence, who was present when the security of the building was breeched, issued a statement: “This attack on our Capitol will not be tolerated and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law.”

• Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb was conducting a weekly COVID-19 briefing when he was asked about the developments in Washington, D.C. “This country is strong and resilient. This is a reminder for all of us that we can, ourselves, model good conduct. We can still fight for our country in a very responsible and heartfelt way. We’re gonna get through it, but it’s going to require folks to step up and show there’s another way, a productive way.”

• Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a joint statement calling on Trump to demand that protestors leave the Capitol, while Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagaher of Wisconsin posted a video message urging Trump to “call it off...This is Banana Republican crap that we’re watching right now...”
