'Archaeology Day 'on Saturday at park

The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park will hold its second Junior Ranger Day from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday with the theme "Archaeology Day."

Those taking part will be able to pretend to be an archaeologist participating in a mock excavation, taking their artifacts to the archaeological lab station to find out how archaeologists catalog them.

Participants can learn about the tools that archaeologists use in the field, as well as soil horizons, stratigraphy, world-famous excavations, and notable archaeologists. Children can also make their own rune stone, leave their handprint on a pictography wall and more. They will also have the opportunity to earn a special Archaeology Junior Ranger badge as well!

This event is the second of four Summer Junior Ranger Days scheduled for the summer. Children participating in the series have the opportunity to earn patches, badges, and T-shirts for completing each separate Junior Ranger Day event. All of these events are free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Jason Collins at 812-882-1776, Ext. 1207 or via e-mail at Jason_M_Collins@nps.gov.
