Shirley Ann Henson Grinstead

OAKLAND CITY — Shirley Ann Henson Grinstead, 77, of Oakland City, entered rest on Thursday March 18, 2021, at Good Samaritan in Vincennes.

She was born on Feb. 16, 1944, in Flora, Illinois, to Glen and Catherine (Goble) Henson. Shirley attended Oakland City University before completing her Master’s of Education at Indiana State University. She taught first grade for 34 years almost exclusively at Oakland City Elementary School and was a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Oakland City.

Nothing was more important than family to Shirley. She was married to her devoted husband, Dale, of 55 years, and was an amazing, loving mother and best friend to her daughters, Elizabeth and Summer.

Once her grandson, Ace Kaden Grinstead, arrived, her heart was stolen and she lived for him — guiding, entertaining and spoiling him.

As a mother, teacher and friend, she was always a source for words of encouragement and wisdom, and she touched the lives of so many along the way.

She loved reflecting upon experiences with her former students. Shirley was more that just a teacher. She mothered, inspired, instilled confidence, values, and loved her students.

Always impeccable and beautiful, Shirley was unique in her dress and style. As she would tell you, she marched to the beat of a different drum. She was the ultimate creative person. She loved crafts, flower gardening, floral arranging, decorating, and watching and feeding birds. She had a beautiful singing voice and played the piano. Exceptional at painting and drawing, she created art painting on canvas, furniture, sweatshirts and anything that caught her creative eye.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Henson.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dale Grinstead; daughters, Summer Grinstead of Vincennes and Elizabeth Grinstead of Rochester, Michigan; grandson, Ace Kaden Grinstead of Vincennes; brother, Herb (Becky) Henson Jr. of Flora, Illinois; sister-in-law, Barbara Grinstead Keitel of Mt Vernon; brother-in-law, Sam Grinstead of Cameron, Missouri; nephews, Herb Henson Jr. and Grant Grinstead; nieces, Kim Henson Wilson, Gretta Grinstead Zacarelee.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place at a later date.
