Barbara Ann Yochum

HENRYVILLE — Barbara Ann (Houghton) Yochum, 86, of Henryville, passed away at 11:33 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021, at her home with her family by her side.

Barbara was born on Friday, June 29, 1934. She was the daughter of Hugh James Houghton III and Karleen (Boyce) Houghton, who are both deceased.

On Jan. 3, 1953, she married Lawrence Herbert Yochum at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Jeffersonville, and he preceded her in death on March 19, 2019.

She was a 1952 graduate of St. Rose Academy in Vincennes and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education at IUS in New Albany. Barbara lived in Jeffersonville for 30 years before moving to Henryville. She worked for Scott County Schools as a teacher for over 20 years. She enjoyed camping, spending time outdoors, gardening, needle pointing, knitting, and sewing. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barbara was a faithful member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Henryville, where she served as a cantor for many years.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Lawrence Jr. and Carol Yochum of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Laura and Gino Couch of Charlestown, Hugh H. and Deborah Yochum of Greenville, South Carolina, Julie Anne and Walter Gardiner of Hollywood, Maryland, and Sarah Sue Mayhall of Vincennes; 15 grandchildren; 23 and a half great-grandchildren; one brother, Hugh James Houghton and his wife, Debbie, of Annapolis, Maryland; and one sister-in-law, Mary Houghton of Jeffersonville.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, John Boyce Houghton; and one sister, Carolyn E. Houghton.

The Rev. Father Adam Ahern will conduct a mass of christian burial at 1 p.m. on Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Henryville, with burial to follow at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday with a rosary service at 12:30 p.m., all at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
