Smoke-free restaurants should be applauded

COVID-19 has undoubtedly changed the world. We have learned just how important our health is to every aspect of our lives. This new focus on health can clearly be seen by the numerous places, such as the French Lick Resort and Casino, Four Winds Casino, and several bars throughout Indiana, who decided to reopen smoke-free.

We applaud all businesses that have elected to reopen smoke-free in Indiana and across the country. We thank them for realizing that secondhand smoke is harmful, and that right now the health of everyone should be at the forefront of our minds.

We know that secondhand smoke is very harmful, costing approximately 41,000 lives each year in the United States.

Even limited amounts of exposure to secondhand smoke can be harmful. There are approximately 7,000 chemicals in a burning cigarette.

Many of those chemicals are toxic to those who are exposed to them.

Again, thank you to those businesses that have reopened smoke-free! We thank you for taking an important step to protect your workers and patrons from the harms of secondhand smoke.
