As chapter regent of the Francis Vigo Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, I feel the need to clarify some details in The Sun-Commercial's Sept. 30's report "VU to raze, build new DAR chapter house and visitor's center."
On Sept. 25, the chapter voted to "enter into discussions with Vincennes University regarding their proposal for a visitors center and chapter house facility." That is what the executive board motion stated.
VU's proposal does include the removal of our current chapter house and the Queen Anne cottage, but we have not agreed to anything. This is not a done deal; Vincennes University has not even secured its funding for the project.
Our chapter will be forming a committee to go into discussions with Vincennes University for this proposed facility.
The chapter will have final approval of any designed structure and memorandum of understanding. The chapter may find itself needing to walk away from discussions if we feel they're not moving in the best interest of the chapter.
Vincennes University has presented the chapter with an intriguing proposal that could be great for Francis Vigo DAR and Grouseland. I do hope this process goes smoothly and to the benefit of both parties, but make no mistake, the wrecking ball is not hurtling its way down Harrison Street at this moment.
