TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Vincennes University men's cross country team was 12th out of 29 teams and the women were 16th among 25 squads at the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Saturday.
Region 24 champion Mathew Keitany paced the Trailblazers with a 42nd-place finish in the men's race in 26:34. Also scoring for VU were Ernest Momodu 61st, 27:31; Ian Boit 67th, 27:44; Isaac Stanford 91st, 28:47; and South Knox graduate Trenton Faulkner 93rd, 28:49.
VU assistant coach Tyler Steigenga noted that several runners moved up during the race. He pointed out that Faulkner passed 49 runners after the first (mile) split, Momodu 42 places, Boit 35 and Keitany 26.
"Mathew led us, like he has all season. Trent stepped up big as our fifth man. He had a great finish and gave everything we had to make sure we held our position," Steigenga said. "I'm proud of our effort. We fell short of getting our goal of top 10, but the men finished seven places better than last year."
South Knox graduate Daisie Kinnett led the VU women, taking 47th in 20:18. Hope Laughlin was 87th, 21:42; Ada Peterman 89th, 21:45; North Knox graduate Brittany Page 110th, 22:25; and Makenna Pruett 132nd, 23:16.
"Daisie managed to pr despite the tough hot and humid conditions. She moved up 31 places from the first split. Hope also had a pr and moved up 28 places," Steigenga said.
Colby, Kan., and Southern Idaho were the men's and women's champions. Colby's Sanele Masondo was the men's winner among 194 runners in 24:07. Faith Nyathi of El Paso, Texas, was the women's winner among 181 runners in 17:47.
The VU teams are running today in Tallahassee at the Half Marathon Championships.
