PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Adam Schenk's first attempt at the infamous 17th hole island green at TPC Sawgrass went into the water, but the Vincennes golfer rebounded for a 1-under-par round at The Players Championship on Thursday.

The 1-under score is good for a tie for 63rd place in the tournament. After today's round, the field is going to be cut to the low 65 golfers and ties.

Schenk absorbed a double-bogey on the 17th, but rebounded with strong putting, making birdie putts of 73 feet on the par-4 14th, 26 feet on the par-4 first, 17 feet on the par-4 sixth and five feet on the par-4 12th. He bogeyed the par-4 fourth.

Hideki Matsuyama tied the course record with a 9-under 63 to claim a two-shot lead over Harris English and Christiaan Bezuidenhout.

Track Spartans earn

places at HSR Qualifier

BLOOMINGTON — South Knox's boys track team had four top-eight finishes in the Bloomington North Invitational/Hoosier State Relay Qualifier at the Indiana University track on Wednesday.

Will Staggs led the way with a second-place finish in the pole vault at 13-0, and teammate Cole Steininger was sixth in the event at 11-6.

Others placing were Isaak Hunckler fifth, long jump, 20-3; and Trenton Faulkner, Nathan Whitehead, Lane Garner, and Owen Singleton, sixth, distance medley relay, 12:42.56.

The Spartans return to Bloomington for the HSR State meet at 10 a.m. March 28.

Lincoln golf outing

set for April 4

Lincoln's golf boosters are hosting a "Final Fore" golf outing fundraiser for the boys and girls teams on April 4 at the Country Club of Old Vincennes.

Lunch and registration begin at noon with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The cost is $50 per golfer and $200 per foursome. Sponsorships are available for $100 per hole, and a $100 long drive/closest to pin are scheduled.

The goal of the fundraiser is to lessen expenses for parents, which include meals after away matches, add training aids for the indoor facility and other improvement ideas for the boys and girls programs.
