Other four league champs decided today
One tournament champion was crowned and four other championship matchups were set at the Vincennes Cub League on Friday.
Jackson Johnson was the hero for VFW in the Babe Ruth League title game. The rising Lincoln freshman struck out 16 and tossed a two-hit shutout to help his team blank 40 et 8, 6-0, at Veterans Field.
Johnson paced the offense as well, smacking two doubles and a triple with three RBIs and a run. Other contributors for top-seeded VFW (13-2-2) were Joey Frey with two hits, two runs; Zach Steffey and Gunner Lamkin two hits, one run; Dagen Parido single, run; and Hunter Gaines and Dalton Butler added hits.
Johnson kept second-seeded 40 et 8 (8-7-2) without a hit through four innings. Kaleb Archer and Brayten McCrary recorded consecutive one-out singles in the fifth, but Johnson worked out of the jam, and he didn't allow another hit. Kaiden Boger worked a pair of walks off Johnson.
Tournament champs in the other four leagues will be determined today as part of the Cub League's annual Championship Saturday. The Junior Rookie League game is at 10 a.m., the Senior Rookie League follows at noon, the Junior League is at 2 p.m., and the Senior League at 4 p.m. All four games are at Joe Bilskie Sr. Field.
