SHOALS — Jordyn Derouin scored a career-high 23 points, and South Knox's girls forced Shoals into 34 turnovers in a 67-45 Blue Chip Conference basketball victory Tuesday.

Lexi Detweiler had 18 of her 20 points in the last three quarters for the short-handed Spartans (6-9, 2-2 Blue Chip), who were without leading scorer Macie Couchenour and part-time starter Natalee Holscher. Couchenour injured her ankle last Saturday at Evansville Christian and may be out the rest of the week. Holscher sat out the game waiting on a COVID-19 test result.

South Knox scored 19 consecutive points in the middle part of the game, turning a 24-19 deficit in the second quarter to a 38-24 lead in the third quarter. The Jug Rox (4-13, 1-4) went more than eight minutes without scoring as the Spartans' press started to take command.

"I was a little worried at the beginning, because I wasn't sure we got off the bus. Plus Shoals played hard and has really improved since last year. They were getting after it, and our kids weren't ready for that," South Knox coach Hollie Eaves said.

"But I was super proud how Jordyn played. I told Lexi it was time for her to step up and be a leader, and she did really well," she said. "I know Hallie Kirk didn't score huge points, but she did a phenomenal job of keeping her head up, having us balanced on the court and talking to the girls. We have to have that. Kaitlyn Williams is a kid who gave us a huge spark. Sydney Riker kept us in it in the first half, just doing the little things, being where she's supposed to be defensively and forcing turnovers."

Derouin and Detweiler combined for 15 in the game-deciding, 19-point run, helped by solid offensive rebounding work. Leah Ellermann ended the spurt with a putback bucket.

South Knox, which went a sparkling 16-of-18 from the free-throw line, added runs of 10 and seven in the second half to build the lead up to 23 points in the fourth quarter.

Gracie Shaw had 19 points and Cassidy Witt 18 for the Jug Rox, who forced a 14-14 tie after one quarter and used an 8-2 spurt to build a five-point lead in the second quarter before their drought.

No junior varsity game was played.

The Spartans are at North Daviess at 6 p.m. Thursday.
