Vincennes 12s, 7s bow out in championship, semifinals
The bids for a state championship by a pair of Vincennes teams were thwarted this weekend as Cub League played host to the 12- and 7-year-old Babe Ruth Southern State tournaments on the Green and Red Diamonds.
The Vincennes 7s run ended in the semifinals Monday, as they rallied from a seven-run deficit before falling, 16-10. The 12s advanced to the championship game Sunday before being knocked out by Newburgh, 9-3.
On Monday, the local 7s dug themselves a 7-0 hole through 3 1/2 innings, but they responded by scoring the maximum seven runs in the fourth inning to tie it. Each team scored twice in the fifth, but McCutchanville seized command with seven in the top of the sixth. Vincennes managed just one in the home half to give McCutchanville the victory.
South Gibson, the top seed, advanced to the final with a 13-9 win over Newburgh Monday, but the championship game ended too late for this edition.
For Vincennes, William Holka, Rylan Hunckler and Landon Bouchie each supplied two hits, and Kamdyn Rehwald, Easton Wilkerson, Koen Lewis and Cy Hendrixson had one.
The Vincennes 7s earned the No. 2 seed in the knockout stage by winning a three-way tiebreaker with McCutchanville and Newburgh for fewest runs allowed. All three squads finished pool play 2-2. On Saturday, Vincennes fell to South Gibson, 4-2, blanked Posey County, 8-0, and nipped McCutchanville, 6-5, before falling to Newburgh, 6-2, on Sunday.
The most thrilling of the pool games came against McCutchanville. Vincennes trailed, 5-4, heading into the final frame when Holka got things started with a single. He was erased on a fielder's choice by Daveon Jennings, but Hunckler followed with a triple to plate Jennings and tie the game. Bouchie was next, and he singled up the middle to score Hunckler for the winning run. Jennings also tripled and singled in the contest, Wilkerson had two hits, Rehwald doubled, and Tayte Walker and Kable Collins added hits.
In the other three pool games, Jennings and Rehwald combined for four hits apiece; Austin Trabant and Bouchie three, Hunckler, Wilkerson and Holka two; and Walker, Collins, Cy Hendrixson and Dakota Walk one.
The Vincennes 12s got to the final against Newburgh by erasing an early five-run hole to defeat South Harrison, 9-6. The local 12s had similar results in their two pool games Saturday, dumping South Harrison, 11-4, and falling to Newburgh, 16-1, in three innings.
Raden Benson paced Vincennes in the tournament with six hits, four RBIs and three runs; Cayden McCrary four hits, three RBIs, two runs; Joel Sanders three hits, three runs, two RBIs; Justin Siewers three hits, three runs, three RBIs; Jayden Ray three hits, three runs, one RBI; Maddox Pargin two hits, two runs, two RBIs; Landon Sanders and Mav Benjamin two hits, one run, one RBI; Tanner Gilbert one hit, three runs; Matthew Pearison one hit, two runs; Boston Gray one hit, one run, one RBI; and Phoenix McCrary one hit, one RBI.
Benson and Landon Sanders did the bulk of the pitching, each hurling four innings. Joel Sanders and Gilbert each tossed three innings, and Pargin, Cayden McCrary, Ray, Gray and Benjamin also pitched. Joel Sanders had the most success, yielding just two runs while striking out six.
The 12s compete in a tournament in Santa Claus this weekend.
