For the second time in a week, North Knox's Hannah Saucerman set the single-match school record for assists, and the Warriors narrowly took out host South Knox, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 16-14, in a Blue Chip Conference volleyball match at the Spartans gym Thursday.
Saucerman racked up 51 assists, one more than the mark she set at Northeast Dubois last Friday, and she added 11 digs, eight points, two kills and one block for North Knox (8-4, 3-1 Blue Chip).
Mallory Rogers had 21 digs, 15 points, two aces; Matty Hoffman 20 kills, two blocks; Emma Wampler 11 kills, eight points, four aces, five digs; Jacqui Alsman 19 digs, seven points; Shelby Haag 12 kills, three digs; Rayne Held nine points, three aces, seven digs; Keanna Thomas nine kills, two blocks; Abigail McKinley 12 digs, six kills, five points; and Tessa Haag three digs.
“Both (varsity and junior varsity) matches were hard fought between county and conference opponents,” North Knox coach Tammy Meurer said. “We are thrilled to come away with the varsity win. I'm proud of how my girls kept their composure to pull of the win. Give South Knox credit. They gave us a tough battle all the way to the end.”
For South Knox (5-13, 1-4), Leah Ellermann had 19 digs, eight kills, two points; Lauren Loudermilk 10 assists, seven digs, two points; Mallory Obermeyer 22 digs; Kaylee Parrish 11 assists, six digs, five points; Bailey Kempfer 12 digs, five kills, two blocks; Rachel Stearns 11 digs, three points, two aces; Hallie Kirk six kills, two blocks; Savannah Benjamin five digs; Kaitlyn Williams four blocks; and Kaitlyn Beard two kills, two blocks.
The Spartans took the junior varsity match, 25-20, 16-25, 15-13. Addy DeLisle had 13 digs, 17 kills, five assists; Evey Dodd 11 assists, nine digs; Mattilynn Ashley five digs, four kills; Jaelyn Grumieaux 13 digs; Shelby Burke four kills; Daphne Kinnett four digs, two kills; Jenesis McClure three digs; Presley Cleveland two kills, two assists; and Ally Sims two kills.
For North Knox's JV (7-4), Harlee Keller had nine points, eight kills, four assists, three digs; Emma Saucerman 13 assists, nine points, eight digs, three kills; Madison McCory five kills, five digs, three points; Kylie Messel four points, two kills, two digs; Reagan Jones six digs; Layna LeRoy three kills, three digs; Gracie LeRoy three digs; and Briley Yochum two kills.
Both county teams play Bloomfield next. The Spartans visit the Cardinals at 6 p.m. Monday, and the Warriors host them at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Schenk inches up to 15th at Corales
PUNTA CANA, D.R. — Adam Schenk followed his 4-under round with a 3-under-par 69 to move up two spots into a tie for 15th place halfway through the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship on Friday.
The Vincennes golfer is five strokes behind leader Hudson Swafford, who has had rounds of 65 an 67. He is just three behind a trio of golfers tied for second, Sean O'Hair, Luke List and Justin Suh.
Schenk was much steadier than he was Thursday, when he coupled eight birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey. Starting on the 10th hole, he got to 7-under overall by the turn when he birdied the par-5 12th and 14th holes and the par-4 18th. On his inward nine, He bogeyed the par-3 second hole, but rebounded with a birdie on the par-4 third.
He is now 2-for-2 in made cuts this 2020-21 season. The cutline was at 3-under.
Schenk tees off with Cameron Percy in the third round at 12:35 p.m. today.
Shoals knocks off volleyball Patriots
SHOALS — Rivet's volleyball team tied it up with a second-set victory, but Shoals recovered for a 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22 Blue Chip Conference victory Friday.
Lauren Carie spiked 17 kills to go with four digs and two blocks for the Patriots (8-6, 2-3 Blue Chip). Arianna Gerkin collected a double-double of 14 kills and 11 digs to go with two points. Kenadee Frey also notched a double-double of 30 assists and 19 digs, along with four kills and three points.
April Tripp led the servers with 12 points and added nine digs and two kills. Anna Herman had 10 points, seven kills and six digs; Elise Lowe six points, 12 digs, two aces, two kills; Addi Downen 20 digs, five points, two aces; Maggie Earley 12 digs; and Ella Benson five digs.
"It was another tough one to lose. We were right with them and it could have gone either way," Rivet coach Jill Ballinger said. "We have to lower our unforced errors. We missed too many serves and hit too many balls out.
"We had some good performances, like Lauren's 17 kills, and double-doubles from Ari and Kenadee."
No junior varsity game was played.
The Patriots host Class 2A No. 1 Barr-Reeve in a varsity-only match at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Lincoln volleyball topples Mater Dei
EVANSVILLE — Maycee Lange spiked a season-high 21 kills, and Lincoln outlasted Evansville Mater Dei, 24-26, 25-14, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10, in a Southern Indiana Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday.
Faith Fleetwood added 10 kills for the Alices (18-7, 5-2 SIAC); Callie Foster 41 assists, 14 digs; Kali Haynes 38 digs, three aces; Livie Koenig 16 digs, six kills; Macy Taylor 15 digs; and Allyson Beckort two aces. Lange and Fleetwood each chipped in two blocks.
Lincoln's junior varsity (15-6) fell in a tight match, 24-25, 25-21, 15-5. Jaclyn Sutton had 10 digs; six aces, five assists; Beckort 26 digs; Gracie Kramer six assists; Zoey Weiss five kills; Gracie Phillips four kills; and Cameron Cary six digs.
The freshmen match went the distance as well, but the Alices lost, 25-21, 16-25, 15-11. McKenna Henderson had 19 assists, Courtney Deffendoll 15 digs, Xzandra Cox eight digs and six kills, and Kelsey Howder six kills.
At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Lincoln visits Terre Haute South, and the freshmen travel to Barr-Reeve.
Green, Klein pace Lawrence Co. harriers
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. — Brayden Green ran third for the boys, and Ophelia Klein was fourth for the Lawrence County cross country team as they hosted a triangular meet on Thursday.
Newton topped the Lawrence County coop in the girls meet, 19-38, while Flora didn't record a team score. The Eagles were the only boys team with enough runners to score.
Green was third in 17:32 for the hosts. Other boys were Seth Seitzinger seventh, 19:07; Reese Ralston 11th, 20:06; and Alex Helderman 13th, 21:03.
For the girls, Klein took fourth in 23:45; Cara Eagleson sixth, 24:12; Melina Loudermilk seventh, 24:49; Kyra Griesemer 10th, 25:40; and Reese Tracy 11th, 25:52.
Lawrence County hosts its invitational at 10 a.m. CST today.
SKMS soccer tops North Knox
South Knox's coed middle school soccer team downed North Knox, 13-2, at the Spartans' pitch on Thursday.
Scoring for the Spartans were Owen Lavely with five goals, Kalissa Lavely three, Delaney Foley two, and Rocco Lazzara, Cala Charleston and Jaxon Smith one. Lavely added five assists, and Foley and Jack Herb one.
For the Warriors, Leslie Kaetzel and Gabe Robarge scored the goals. Keepers Tabbi Alexander and Jeremiah Mackey recorded nine and three saves.
7-8 volley Warriors outlast Lions
LOOGOOTEE — North Knox's seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams each earned three-set victories over Loogootee on Thursday.
The eighth-grade Warriors (9-3) won, 22-25, 25-21, 15-4. Alex McKinley had 15 points, three assists, nine assists, six kills; Javen Miller 12 points, three aces; Brynna Collins seven kills, six assists, three points; Abbi Deckard four points; Ally Crist four kills; Marissa Petelle three points, three kills.
North Knox's seventh grade (6-6) won, 23-25, 25-12, 15-9. Keely McMillin had 15 points, nine aces, six kills, two assists; Emilee Turner five points, four aces; Baylee McClure six points, four aces, five kills; Jade Richter six points, three aces, four kills; Alyssa Chattin three points; and Rozlynn Thorne two kills.
North Knox competes in the Blue Chip Conference tournament at South Knox today.
MS Vikings control volley Spartans
South Knox dropped a trio of middle school volleyball matches against visiting Barr-Reeve on Thursday.
The eighth-grade Spartans (4-6) were downed, 25-13, 25-15. Caroline Beard had four points, three aces; Megan Obermeyer two aces, three digs; Ella Bobe two points, two digs; Grace Carie and Bren Hill two points; and Korinne Barnhart and Alex Sutton two digs.
South Knox's seventh grade (7-3) fell, 25-6, 25-7. Kamryn Elliott had five digs, three points; Jenna Bloebaum three digs; and Madison Parrish, Halle Carmean and Maycie Linneweber two digs.
The sixth-grade match went to the Vikings, 25-16, 25-14. Serving points were Kendal Hill with 11, Brianna Benjamin four, Alli Harvey three, and Alivia Kehl and Kayelynn Stoud two.
North Knox JH girls run 3rd at Barr-Reeve
MONTGOMERY — Rorri Bottum ran in fifth place, and North Knox's junior girls cross country team finished in the middle of the pack at the Barr-Reeve Invitational on Thursday.
North Daviess won the meet with 24, Barr-Reeve 57, North Knox 59, Northeast Dubois 82 and Shoals 133.
Bottum finished in 12:50, 42 seconds behind winner Emily Wagler of Barr-Reeve. Others scoring for the Warriors were Emma Telligman 10th, 13:44; Olivia Knabel 12th, 13:55; Hayden Coats 14th, 14:02; and Abbi Urbain 18th, 14:23.
