WASHINGTON — Lincoln's Ari Gerkin scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, and Gracie Kramer knocked in four of the Alices' season-high nine 3-pointers as they pulled away late to deal Washington a 59-43 girls basketball defeat Tuesday at the Hatchet House.
Kramer finished with a season-best 13 points for the Alices (4-2), while Macy Sexton scored eight and Kahre McCrary seven.
Washington (3-2) entered with a three-game winning streak after getting pummeled by North Knox, 60-19, in their season opener, and the Hatchets were even with Lincoln at halftime, 29-29.
Gerkin began the second half scoring and was fouled on the play. She missed her free throw, but Sexton cleaned it up with the put back to make it 33-29, and Lincoln led the rest of the way.
“I can't say enough about how hard our young ladies played. We played as a team, and we played smart basketball,” Lincoln coach Tim Young said. “It was a team win. As the night wore on, our age made a difference. We played like a strong basketball team. Our young ladies are getting their (shooting) confidence back.
“I told (Washington coach) Gretchen (Miles) I hope we're on opposite sides of the draw in the sectional. They're not the same team they were the first game of the season, and they're getting better and better.”
The Alices dug themselves an 8-3 hole in the first quarter but countered with their own run to go up 13-10 after one. The second period was back and forth, and a Mattye Meadows 3-pointer in the waning seconds tied it at the break.
Gerkin scored six in the third period, with Kramer and McCrary supplying 3s, as Lincoln went ahead 46-38. A 7-0 start to the fourth, capped off by a Faith Fleetwood 3 put the margin out of reach at 53-38.
Lincoln's junior varsity was defeated, 44-13. Kiaya Farrar led the Alices (2-4) with seven points.
The Alices host Class 3A No. 5 Corydon Central at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
