DETROIT — Vincennes golfer Adam Schenk beat the rain Thursday, but his first-round score of even par puts him in a tough position to make the cut at the PGA's Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Schenk was outside the top 100 late in the first round at Detroit, which had more than a three-hour rain delay after he completed play. The projection was that a few of the late groups were not going to get their first round completed before darkness.
Davis Thompson claimed the lead with a 9-under-par 63, two shots ahead of Brandon Hagy and Tom Lewis.
It was a steady round for Schenk, who carded 16 pars. He bogeyed the 453-yard, par-4 second hole, when a poor drive forced him to chip out that led to an unconverted 12-foot par putt. His birdie came on the 479-yard sixth hole, when he hit his 187-yard approach shot to within seven feet and made the putt.
To play on the weekend, Schenk must be within the low-65 golfers and ties after today's play. That score was at 2-under late Thursday.
Schenk's starting time today is 12:20 p.m. on the 10th hole with fellow playing partners Henrik Norlander (-4) and Emiliano Grillo (+2).
