ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Adam Schenk rallied for birdies on three of his final six holes to finish his first round in the RSM Classic with a 2-under-par 70 Thursday, putting him in a tie for 46th place at the Sea Island Golf Club.
The Vincennes golfer played the Plantation Course on Thursday and plays the Seaside Course today.
Cole Hammer is the leader at 8-under, with Ben Griffin in second at 7-under. They both played the Plantation Course, but Beau Hossler and Callum Tarren are two of the three tied for third at 6-under, and they both played the Seaside Course.
Schenk was 1-under through four holes after opening with a birdie at the par-4 first. Bogeys came at the par-4 fifth and sixth, but the Vincennes golfer birdied the par-3 seventh and hit the turn at even par. Schenk fell back to 1-over with a bogey at the par-4 12th. He immediately moved back to even by birdieing the par-4 13th, and his final birdies came at the par-4 15th and par-5 18th.
Schenk likely needs to be under par again today to make the cut of the top-65 and ties. A logjam of 21 golfers were tied for 65th at 1-under after Thursday. In six events in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season, Schenk has earned two top-25 finishes and missed two cuts.
Schenk is in the first group to tee off today from the 10th hole of the Seaside Course at 9 a.m., along with playing partners Henrik Norlander and Alex Smalley.
