HUTSONVILLE, Ill. — Tommy Herman racked up 21 points, but Rivet failed to contain the 3-point shooting of Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville, and the Patriots fell to the Panthers, 47-36, in a boys basketball game Friday.

Freshman Fisher Lemon scored a career-best nine points on three 3-pointers, but no one else had more than three for Rivet (2-5). Gary Higginbotham topped OPH with 20 points and Hayden Johnson scored 15. The Panthers connected on eight 3-pointers, five from Higginbotham.

Rivet never led but did well to get close after falling down by 10 in the third period. Lemons' final 3-pointer pulled the Patriots as tight as 36-31 with about 6:30 to play, but the Patriots' offense went silent the rest of the way. The Panthers (4-15) stretched their margin to 45-31 before Rivet whittled the final margin.

“I saw a lot more positive stuff. We grew up a bit,” Rivet coach Mark Bezy said. “Collectively it was one of our better games we've played. Unfortunately we kind of waited for them to hit us in the mouth. They hit some 3s, and we didn't do a good job on their shooters. But after that we settled in. Our freshmen (Lemon and Gage Letts) did a lot of growing up. We have a young team, and it showed, but I'm pleased with the effort.”

OPH's opening salvo was a 14-4 punch that featured three 3s from Higginbotham and one by Johnson. Lemon hit his first two 3s in the second period to help Rivet narrow the margin to 17-13 at halftime.

Both teams doubled their totals in the third period to take the gap to 34-26 after three.

No junior varsity game was played.

Rivet heads north again Saturday to visit North Central at 4 p.m.
