Only baseball, softball Warriors have favorable sectional openers
The IHSAA released its baseball and softball tournament pairings early this season on Sunday, but for the most part it didn't benefit Knox County.
Both tournaments are still at least three weeks away. The Class 3A Washington and 2A South Knox softball sectionals have their championship games on May 26. The 3A Southridge, 2A Mitchell and Class A North Daviess baseball sectionals have their finals on Memorial Day, May 31.
North Knox's baseball team was the clear winner among the seven county squads and should have the best path to reach the sectional championship game. The Warriors (9-6), who own the best baseball record in the county, drew the bye in the Mitchell Sectional and take on Eastern Greene (2-10) in the 1 p.m. semifinal May 31. North Knox pasted the Thunderbirds on April 15, 11-1 in five innings.
On the other end is South Knox (8-9), which takes on perceived favorite Linton in the opening round at 5:30 p.m. May 26. They play their regular-season game May 15 at Linton. The other two teams in the field, Paoli and Mitchell, play in the other first-round game.
Lincoln (8-10) didn't receive a bye in the Southridge Sectional and takes on Gibson Southern (9-8) at 8 p.m. May 26. The two teams meet in the regular season on May 20.
Honorable mention Southridge and Washington, which was honorable mention a week ago, are on the opposite ends of the bracket and are the picks to reach the final. The Alices are on the Hatchets' side of the draw, and Washington took the matchup of the two earlier this season, 10-7.
Rivet (0-10) collected a bye, but must take on host and 10th-ranked North Daviess (8-5) in the semifinal at 10:30 a.m. May 31. Fourth-ranked Loogootee (10-5) and honorable mention Barr-Reeve are also in the loaded five-team field.
South Knox is the only county team to host a sectional, and the softball Spartans (8-5) have the best record in the county. But the hosts must avenge a regular-season loss to Linton (6-7) if they want to get out of the 6 p.m. May 24 opening game. The Miners, who were honorable mention earlier this season, defeated South Knox, 5-2, on April 15.
Just like in baseball, North Knox (3-8) got the better draw with its matchup with Eastern Greene (3-12). The Warriors topped the host Thunderbirds, 12-9, on April 13. Honorable mention Sullivan (12-4) is in a good spot. The Golden Arrows received a bye and takes on Southridge in the semifinals.
The softball Alices, like many in the county, didn't receive a favorable opponent. Lincoln (2-16) takes on Pike Central (9-5) in the four-team affair at Washington at 8:15 p.m. May 25. The Alices just fell to the Chargers, 15-5, Monday. Washington and Princeton meet in the 6:30 p.m. opener.
