ELNORA — Shoals has often been a team that opponents can take lightly. But South Knox's boys basketball team found out Saturday that isn't the case this season.

Reece Sherrill poured in 18 points and the Jug Rox (2-3) never trailed in a 51-34 victory in the fifth-place game of the Old National Bank Classic.

Brennon Robinson scored all of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Spartans (4-3), who easily had their most listless outing of the season in going 1-2 in the week-long tournament. South Knox had a nine-game winning streak over Shoals going into the game, but was held to 19 points in the first three quarters and trailed by as much as 23 points in the fourth quarter.

"That's probably the most disappointing loss in all my years of coaching. We didn't come to play at all," Spartans coach David Burkett said. "What I told them after the game is that I'm tired of yelling. I had to yell all day yesterday to get something done (a 53-44 win over winless Rushville). I shouldn't have to coach effort."

South Knox forged a 4-4 tie on consecutive Tristian Wirth baskets, but that was the game's only tie and the only time the Spartans had back-to-back buckets until late in the fourth quarter.

The Jug Rox held South Knox without a point for more than three minutes in scoring the next seven points, and took a 14-6 lead after one quarter. Rylan Perry netted two 3-pointers in the second quarter to help Shoals expand the margin to 24-11 at halftime.

It was 26-16 in the third quarter, when the Jug Rox ripped off a pair of seven-point gashes to claim a 40-19 bulge by the end of the stanza. Levi Pendley had seven of his nine in the period. The game's biggest lead was 50-27.

It was a season low for the Spartans, who were held to 36 points in a loss to North Daviess in the classic opener on Tuesday.

"We can't make a layup and we can't hit a jump shot. Something has to change or it's going to be a long January and February for us," Burkett said. "I have to find a way to get us back to where we were offensively, to get us jump-started."

Garrett Holscher added seven points for South Knox, and Wirth had six. Branden Perry joined Pendley with nine points for Shoals, which was a late replacement for Paoli in the tournament.

South Knox plays at Northeast Dubois at 6 p.m. Friday.
