Holscher, Like lead the way for the winners

Rare cloudy and cool conditions enveloped the annual Knox County meet Saturday at South Knox, but what wasn't rare was the Spartans dominating the day.

Led by boys and girls winners Oliver Holscher and Ava Like, South Knox romped on its Bob Swank Course with the top three finishers in both races to take out county foes Lincoln and North Knox.

The Spartans tallied 17 in the boys race, with the Alices at 46 and the Warriors 78.

Holscher's winning time was 17:34, eight seconds faster than Jacob Siewers, who had the edge over the first half of the race. Chase Staggs took third in 18:08, Dylan Maeder fifth, 18:23 and Caleb Cork sixth, 18:33. Recognized also as all-county runners for top-10 finishes were Lane Garner seventh, 18:37; and Dylan Hardig ninth, 18:59.

It was the 10th consecutive county win for South Knox.

"We had a team meal and meeting Friday, and I told our guys we could get eight on the all-county team, and we pushed it. Getting seven on there is pretty cool," Spartans coach Matt Toothman said. "Oliver won the county for the second year in a row. Jacob led through two miles and had a nice run. Chase had been running fourth and fifth on our team, so getting third was a heck of a race by him.

"I didn't want our guys to wear any watches because I wanted them to just feel how they were running. The boys felt good. The 1-5 time gap was 59 seconds and that's a sign of a good team. We've built a good base, and now we're going to work on our intervals to try to get more speed."

Lincoln's Jason Ramirez, who just joined the team recently, took fourth in an 18:16 clocking. Keenan Clegg placed eighth, 18:41; Daxx Weist 10th, 19:07; Blake Meade 12th, 19:23; and Nate Harris 17th, 20:39.

"This was a nice reality check for us. South Knox took us out behind the woodshed," Alices coach Craig Klitz said. "There is a reason they are onbe of the more formidable opponents in this part of the state. Coming over the top of that last hill was nothing but a sea of red. Even the casual observer could see that we just aren't in shape. Thankfully, we have a fix for that."

Freshman Calvin Crabtree led North Knox with a 16th-place time of 20:28. Cavan Lemberg was 18th, 20:41; Caleb Bottum 19th, 21:25; Carter Lemberg 23rd, 22:12; and Dakota Lawrence 24th, 22:42.

The South Knox girls were one point away from perfection at 16, followed by the Warriors 52 and Alices 68.

Like completed the course in 21:18, 12 seconds ahead of teammate Gretchen Carie. Macie Couchenour and Peyton Robbins followed with third and fourth place times of 21:43 and 21:55. Daisie Kinnett claimed sixth in 22:59. Abby Cunningham (seventh, 23:09) and Aubrey Nowaskie (10th, 23:57) were also all-county runners.

"It was a good day, a lot of confidence building. Our girls have a negative feeling about our course, because it's so tough, but the weather was good and they had a good run. They didn't think it was so bad today," Lady Spartans coach Betsy Couchenour said.

"Ava had a solid run, and Gretchen and Macie are two who are going to be back and forth all year. They're pushing each other. Peyton was great for us, and she's been battling a foot issue. Daisie is gutting it out right now, and Abby and Aubrey are coming on so well as freshmen. We wanted 15, but North Knox's Brittany Page broke us up. She's running well."

Page claimed fifth in a 22:29 clocking. Alexis Petelle took eighth, 23:36; Reegan Hammelman 14th, 25:40; Sidney Kahre 15th, 25:44; and Ava Williams 16th, 25:58, to complete the Warriors scoring.

Gracie Kramer led Lincoln, getting ninth in 23:46. Alaina Lowery was 12th, 24:11; Olivia Carie 18th, 27:24; Alexus Arvin 19th, 27:40; and Sierra Mullins 20th, 27:43.

"It was nice to see Gracie run her fastest time on the South Knox course, a 22-second improvement over her regional-qualifying time from last year's sectional," Lady Alices coach Ralph Connor said.

South Knox also controlled both middle school races. In the boys race, the Spartans had 15, the Warriors 51 and the Alices 82. For the girls, South Knox had 24, North Knox 45 and Clark 64. Rivet had runners in both races, but not enough for team scores.

Sam Singleton and Addelyn Kehl of the Spartans were the race winners in times of 10:48 and 12:04.

On Saturday, South Knox hosts its invitational at 10:30 a.m., and the Alices are at the Shakamak Invitational at 9 a.m. The Warriors are at the Barr-Reeve Invitational at 6 p.m. Sept. 22.
