JASPER — For the second straight season, South Knox swimmer Jacob Siewers is heading to the IHSAA State Finals, but this season the junior added to his medal count.
Siewers cruised to a repeat crown in the 200-yard freestyle, and he eked out another first place in the 100 freestyle in the Jasper Sectional on Saturday.
Lincoln didn't have any individuals advance to the State swim meet, but as a team the Alices placed sixth out of 13 scoring teams. The host Wildcats won the team championship with 540, Lincoln scored 132, and the Spartans were ninth with 118.
In the 200 freestyle, Siewers finished in 1:44.41, over two seconds quicker than his qualifying time and nearly four seconds better than runner-up John Allen of Bedford North Lawrence. In the 100 freestyle Siewers finished in 46.55. Payton Buse of Tecumseh was on his heels, taking second in 46.97. South Knox senior Will Staggs took seventh in the event.
The Spartans nearly had their 200 freestyle relay team make it to state. The team of Staggs, Will Mahan, Chase Staggs and Siewers were runners-up in 1:34.75. Jasper won the relay in 1:30.06. The Alices' team of Teighan Johnson, Parker Dugan, CT Nash and Jacob King placed eight. The same South Knox foursome also grabbed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Lincoln's best finisher was Caleb Newman, who took third place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.33. Jasper's Luke Dawkins won in 1:02.65. Nolan Petts, Newman, Nash and King placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, and Johnson placed sixth in the one-meter diving.
The State Finals preliminaries will be swam in two sessions Friday due to COVID-19 protocols. The first is at noon, and Siewers competes in the second at 5:30 p.m. The top 16 return Saturday with the top eight vying for a state championship. Diving starts at 9 a.m. Saturday with swimming finals at 3 p.m.
