NAPA, Calif. — Adam Schenk fought off a rough start to shoot a 1-under-par round, birdieing his final hole with a 38-foot putt to make the cut on the number at The Safeway Open on Friday.
The Vincennes golfer is 5-under halfway through the tournament. Although he had a sub-par round Friday, he dropped 31 places into a tie for 53rd.
Teeing off on the 10th hole, Schenk bogeyed the 409-yard, par-4 10th and the 405-yard, par-4 12th to drop to 2-under for the tournament.
But he rebounded with a six-foot birdie putts on the 453-yard, par-4 13th and the 183-yard, par-3 15th, along with a four-footer for birdie on the 563-yard, par-5 16th to make the turn at 1-under.
He suffered bogeys on the 206-yard, par-3 second and the 222-yard, par-3 seventh. Schenk responded again with a 36-foot birdie putt on the 414-yard, par-4 before his final hole magic on the 564-yard, par-5 ninth.
Sam Burns has a two-shot lead at 15-under, with Harry Higgs the nearest pursuer.
Three are tied at 12-under, including first-round leader Russell Knox.
