GALLATIN, Tenn. — Volunteer State took advantage of Vincennes University’s early mistakes for five runs in each of the first two innings, and the Trailblazers never recovered in dropping a 16-3 decision in seven innings Wednesday.
Colton Evans supplied the only highlight for VU (6-11), launching a three-run home run in the third inning to get his club within 10-3. Kaden Elliott and Carter Whitehead each added a single as the Blazers were limited to three hits.
The scheduled nine-inning game ended after seven due to the 10-run rule.
Logan Medsker took the pitching loss. He walked the first three batters before giving up a sacrifice fly. After issuing another walk and a single, Medsker exited. He was on the hook for all five first-inning runs.
Jace Parnin, who surrendered a double before getting out of the first inning, found more trouble in the second inning. He allowed a double and single to start the frame, with the first run coming off a throwing error on a stolen base. Parnin then issued two walks around a fly out, and Carter Vrabel blasted a grand slam for the Pioneers (11-8) to all but put the margin out of reach at 10-0.
Evans’ three-run shot came in response to Vrabel’s slam, but Evans only got the chance after Elliott reached on an error, which would have been the third out.
VU’s next seven batters were retired before Elliott singled to lead off the sixth. Evans and Whitehead followed with strikeouts however, and the Blazers didn’t record another hit.
Caleb Moore, who relieved Parnin, put up two scoreless frames before running into trouble in the sixth inning. He worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs, all earned, on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Jack Robinson gave up two runs on two hits in 1/3 of an inning; Christian Pinson allowed an unearned run on two walks with a strikeout in 2/3 of an inning, and Eli Steimel notched a strikeout in 1/3 of an inning.
VU hosts Schoolcraft (Mich.) for a four-game series this weekend. They play a nine-inning game at 4 p.m. today, a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, and a nine-inning game at noon Sunday.
