Hannah Ivers put up seven of her game-high 18 points in a pivotal third quarter, and Class 2A No. 10 South Knox held off visiting Sullivan, 56-54, in a girls basketball game Wednesday.

Lexi Detweiler added 15 points, and Macie Couchenour chipped in nine. Mykayla Couchenour, the team’s leading scorer, was saddled with foul trouble and had just four points. Delaynie Shorter led Sullivan with 17 points, Gracie Shorter scored 16 and Reagan Holeman 10.

The Golden Arrows (3-3) had a six-point halftime lead, but Gracie Shorter picked up her fourth foul less than two minutes into the third. South Knox (8-1) used a 15-4 third-quarter advantage to flip the script with Shorter on the bench, and the Spartans never trailed in the fourth.

“We weren’t ready, and we got lucky in a couple of situations,” South Knox coach Hollie Eaves said. “(Sullivan) was ready to play, and they gave us their best game. We had too many turnovers, and we missed blockouts. We just didn’t seem locked in, and that’s my biggest disappointment.

“We were able to press some, but we got in foul trouble. We were reaching and not moving our feet, so I had to call it off. But we had some younger kids like Natalee (Holscher) and Jordyn (Derouin) that really stepped up for us in that third quarter.”

South Knox tied it at 36 with a 9-3 start to the third quarter. Sullivan went back up by one with a free throw, but the Spartans got the last six points of the stanza to go up, 42-37. The Arrows got back within 47-46 before South Knox scored four in a row midway through the fourth, and the margin never got tighter than the final score.

South Knox was only 3-of-7 from the free-throw line in the final minute, but Sullivan was just 2-of-4 in that stretch. Delainey Shorter hit a 3 just before the buzzer to cut the final deficit to two.

The first quarter had three ties with the final one coming at 12 at the end of the period. Gracie Shorter scored eight in a 13-0 Sullivan run that spanned both periods and gave the Arrows a 21-12 edge. Derouin broke an over-five minute drought for the Spartans, but Sullivan got the lead back to 31-22. Derouin added the first bucket in a 5-0 South Knox spurt before Delainey Shorter scored just before the horn to make it 33-27 at halftime. Gracie Shorter scored 12 in the first half.

No junior varsity game was played.

South Knox hosts North Knox at 6 p.m. Saturday.
