EVANSVILLE — The Class 3A No. 1 Evansville Memorial girls have pressed many teams into losses, with South Knox the latest target Thursday.

The Spartans couldn't overcome 29 turnovers, with the Tigers pulling away late in the first quarter for a double-figure margin they built on in a 56-27 triumph.

Macie Couchenour, buoyed by 5-of-6 free-throw shooting, had a team-high 13 points for South Knox (4-9). Lexi Detweiler was next with six points as the two combined for five of the team's eight field goals.

Ryleigh Anslinger had 10 of her 15 points in the first quarter to pace Memorial (13-0), which has won 12 of its games by more than 20 points. Peyton Murphy added 12 points.

Spartans coach Hollie Eaves had a simple message to her team before taking on the top-ranked Tigers.

"I told them I wanted them to just show up and go hard," Eaves said. "I'm not mad. We hustled and showed up for all four quarters. We've had several games where we showed up for three quarters and not for one.

"We played OK for the most part, but we missed too many shots and had way too many turnovers," she said. "Memorial is always looking to get the ball. They run and jump you and are just so long. They're athletic girls who get up and down the floor well and go hard the whole time."

South Knox had the game tied at four more than halfway through the opening quarter. But Anslinger's early output allowed the Tigers to take a 16-5 by the end of the stanza. The lead grew to 28-12 at halftime and 43-16 after three quarters. Memorial had nine players score, while the Spartans nearly kept it even in the fourth quarter with a 13-11 tally.

South Knox's junior varsity fell, 26-16, in a two-quarter game. Jaelyn Grumieaux and Jordyn Derouin had five apiece for the Spartans (8-4).

South Knox plays at Evansville Christian in a varsity-only game at 1 p.m. Saturday.
