Lightning delayed play, and the heavy rains that followed ensured that no games would be completed as the Babe Ruth 7-year old Southern Indiana State tournament attempted to get underway on Friday.
Vincennes played the opener against South Gibson on Friday, and the game got started under dark clouds, strong winds and a light drizzle. About 20 minutes after the first pitch, lightning sent players to the dugout, and torrential rains followed to wash out the rest of the evening's games.
South Gibson plated one in the second inning and three in the third to build a 4-0 lead over Vincennes, with the hosts getting ready to bat in the third. Daveon Jennings and Kamdyn Rehwald each had hits for Vincennes over the first two innings.
That game is slated to resume at 10 a.m. today, and the rest of the schedule was pushed back as well. Newburgh and McCutchanville play the second game today at 10:45 a.m., and games continue every hour and 15 minutes the rest of the day, with the final game starting at 5 p.m. Vincennes plays Posey County at noon and McCutchanville at 3:45 p.m.
On Sunday, Vincennes concludes pool play against Newburgh at noon. The knockout stage starts at 4:30 p.m. Sunday with the four seed playing the fifth seed, but because teams can only play three games in one day, the rest of the tournament will be completed on Monday. Semifinals are at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., and the championship is at 8:30 p.m. All 7-year-old tournament games will be played on the Red Diamond.
The Cub League is also hosting the 12-year old Southern State tournament at Joe Bilskie Sr. Field, starting today.
The Vincennes 12s face South Harrison at 11 a.m. and Newburgh at 5 p.m. Knockout games for the four-team field are at noon and 2 p.m. Sunday with the championship at 4 p.m.
