LOOGOOTEE — Rivet put forth a game effort through 2 ½ quarters against Loogootee on Friday, but the Class A No. 4 Lions finished the third period strong and ran away from the Patriots, 74-38, in a Blue Chip Conference boys basketball game.

Peyton Catt had 17 points to lead Rivet, while Sam Hinkle added 10. The Patriots (2-5, 1-3 Blue Chip) limited Looogotee big man Silas Bauer to five points, 10 below his average, but Peyton Bledsoe went off for 27 points. Jordan Wildman scored 12 points, Jalen Wildman 11, and Luke Nonte nine.

Rivet barely threatened Loogootee (9-2, 1-0) after the Lions built a 14-5 first-quarter lead, but the margin didn't eclipse 20 until late in the third quarter, which was a moral victory for the Patriots against the heavily-favored foe.

“The first 2 ½ quarters, I was almost speechless,” Rivet coach Mark Bezy said. “Yeah, they punched us in the mouth early, but we sustained it. We did a great job on Silas in the first half. They pressed us, and we were breaking it, and we were composed. I'm so pleased with the first 2 ½ quarters, and I was happy for the boys. They were having fun. Yes, we were losing, but we were competing. I'll take that any night.”

The Lions hit four 3s in the first period, and Bledsoe scored 12 as they roared to a 28-14 lead. The margin only increased to 40-22 at halftime, and Catt and Hinkle got the first two buckets of the second half to bring Rivet within 14. The gap was 48-31 when Loogootee took off, taking it to 57-31 after three, and Bledsoe's three-point play to start the fourth raised the margin to 29.

“We got away from what we were doing well,” Bezy said. “Physically, maybe they wore us down a bit, and as coaches we have to do a better job of getting Sam and Charlie (Niehaus) breaks. But Loogootee is a tremendous team, and they're quick. That's tough to simulate.”

No junior varsity game was played.

The Patriots visit Dugger for a 6 p.m. varsity-only contest Saturday.
