CENTRALIA, Ill. — Scoring inside and outside to go with a good defense is often a recipe to victory, and that's what the No. 20 Vincennes University men dished out to Kaskaskia on Saturday.

Justin Archer poured in 21 points, Brevin Jefferson had 11 of his 13 in the second half, and the Trailblazers held the Blue Devils to 20 points under their average in a 69-58 Region 24 basketball victory.

John Ukomadu added 10 for VU (14-5, 10-5 Region 24), which has won six of its last seven games. Reserve Chauncey Hughes had 14 points to pace Kaskaskia (10-9, 7-8), which never led in the second half.

"Kaskaskia is always going to be tough to guard. They can beat on you threes, drives, post-ups and cuts. They test you everywhere, and we held them to 58 points on the road," Blazers coach Todd Franklin said. "Our defense has been pretty good all year.

"Our offense at times was better and at times it was spotty, but when we had to get it done, we did."

Hughes' three-point play with nine minutes to go cut VU's lead to 46-43. But Jefferson netted a 15-footer, Archer an 18-footer and Randy Tucker a layup to take it 52-43 with 7:54 showing, forcing the Blue Devils into a timeout.

Kaskaskia never mounted a charge, as the margin didn't dip below eight the rest of the way. Archer and Jefferson combined for nine of the Blazers last 15 points.

"Justin was better than what's he has been the last couple of weeks. We need more offensive punch from him and Ukomadu, who's playing harder," Franklin said. "Brevin is starting to take it and finish some plays. We need somebody to do it, and it looks like it's going to be him. It's good to see the beginning of that.

"We're 5-4 in the (region) on the road after starting 0-2. That's a good achievement for this ballclub, which has had to play nine of 15 (region) games on the road. They've battled through."

VU led 29-22 at halftime, holding Kaskaskia to one field goal over the last six minutes.

The half had six lead changes and five ties before the Blazers' eight-point run pushed them ahead for good. Archer, who had a nine-point half, scored the last two baskets in the spurt, with his 16-footer giving VU a 26-19 lead.

Ukomadu scored eight in the first half, including the team's first six points.

The Blazers game with Southwestern Illinois for Tuesday was cancelled, due to coronavirus cases within the Blue Storm program. VU concludes its regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday with visiting Wabash Valley.

VU women escape 3-point barrage

CENTRALIA, Ill. — Kaskaskia's 3-point shooting kept it tight, but the Vincennes University women's basketball team kept enough distance throughout for a 86-76 Region 24 victory on Saturday.

Amani Brown led the Trailblazers (14-3, 12-2 region) with 22 points, Shaila Beeler scored 14, Reeva Hammelman 11, and Nina Blade nine. The Blue Angels (4-14, 3-11) made 12 threes, including five by Melea Lovelace, who led four double-figure scorers with 20 points.

The lead waffled between six and 14 the bulk of the game, but a Kaskaskia 3-pointer at the third-quarter horn made it 65-60. The Blue Angels were within 71-65 and had possession to get closer several minutes into the fourth, but Hammelman canned a corner 3-pointer with 6:55 left to take the margin to nine. The gap didn’t get smaller than eight the rest of the way.

Kaskaskia whittled a 16-6 deficit to 20-18 before the Blazers pushed it back out to 27-21 after one. Brown had a buzzer-beating 3 at halftime to make it 52-42.

VU hosts Southwestern Illinois at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
