BEDFORD — Bedford North Lawrence scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, and the Stars held off South Knox for a 36-30 boys basketball win on Saturday.

Dakota Candler had 10 points for the Spartans (5-4), and Garrett Holscher and Cody Dawson each had nine. Colten Leach scored 15 for Bedford (4-6), and Kooper Stanley nine.

The Spartans had a 25-22 lead after three. Jackson Miracle scored on a putback to bring Bedford within one, and South Knox proceeded to aid the Stars' cause with turnovers on its next five possessions. Colten Leach provided a steal-and-score to cap the run at 30-25.

Holscher ended the run with a 3-pointer, but Kaedyn Bennett answered back his own trifecta, his only points of the game, to extend it back to 33-28. Cody Dawson netted two free throws to cut the gap to three in the final minutes, but Bedford drained 3-of-4 free throws in the last 40 seconds to seal it.

South Knox was 8-of-11 from the free-throw line, but missed the front end of a pair of one-and-bonuses down the stretch.

“Leach came up with three big steals. He got Garrett twice, and he got Brennon (Robinson) once. That leads to bad situations,” South Knox coach David Burkett said. “I was worried about this team after our last two games, but we competed tonight. For almost the entire game, we competed our rear ends off. Obviously we have to take care of the ball in the fourth quarter, and (Bennett) finally made one of his 3s.

“We handled their defense well, and defensively we're where we need to be. We took advantage inside, and Cody and Dakota both scored for us. The only frustrating thing was Holscher's two picks. He's our guy, and he has to take care of the ball in those situations. But we're there. We just have to clean up a few things to get us over the hump against good teams.”

The first half had three ties and six lead changes. Bedford led, 8-7, after one quarter, and a Holscher 3-pointer punctuated a 7-0 run to give South Knox a 12-8 advantage. Ben Cosner gave the Stars a 18-17 halftime edge with a put-back on a missed free throw with two seconds left in quarter.

Bedford's advantage was 22-19 midway through the third when a Candler 3-pointer and Dawson three-point play pushed South Knox ahead, 25-22.

The Stars claimed the junior varsity game, 39-35. Jackson Hoops led the Spartans (5-2) with 14, and Clayton Peterson added seven.

South Knox visits Class 3A No. 4 Evansville Bosse at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
