LAS VEGAS — Adam Schenk, with the first tee time of the day before 7 a.m., bolted to a 5-under-par round that put him in a tie for eighth place after the first round of Shriners Hospital for Children Open.

The Vincennes golfer had a five-birdie, no-bogey opening round that put him three shots behind co-leaders Nick Taylor and Maverick McNealy. Brian Harman is alone in third at 7-under.

Starting on the 10th hole, Schenk birdied the par-4 12th, par-5 13th, par-4 15th and the par-5 16th in an outward, 4-under 32. He took it to 5-under with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.

It’s a promising start for the South Knox graduate, who had barely missed cuts in two of the first three PGA tournaments this season.

Schenk starts his second round at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) on the first hole with playing partners Danny Lee and Anirban Lahiri.
