South Knox senior Dakota Candler was named on Monday as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Franciscan Health Player of the Week in District 3 for the period of Feb. 20-25.
Candler averaged 26.0 points in two games last week, pacing the Spartans to a 60-58 win at Pike Central on Tuesday, and a 69-39 triumph over Wood Memorial. The 6-5 senior scored 28 against the Chargers, including the game-winning three-point play with five seconds remaining. He added eight rebounds and three assists while shooting 12-of-17.
Against the Trojans, Candler scored 24 with six boards and three assists, connecting on 11-of-14 shots.
Other boys winners were Dominique Murphy, East Chicago Central, District 1; and Dylan Moles, Greendfield-Central, District 2.
The girls awards this week were handed out to each class rather than district, due to it being the state finals. Winners from the four champions were Chloe Spreen, Bedford North Lawrence, 4A; Morgan Gawthrop, Fairfield, 3A; Amber Tretter, Forest Park, 2A; and Linzie Wernert, Lanesville, A.
Final week for Cub League sign-ups
The Vincennes Cub League is hosting an in-person registration on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the hitting facility, 1501 S. 14th St.
The Cub League is open to boys and girls ages 3-15, based on their age as of April 30, and the cost is $100 per player, and the deadline to register is Sunday.
Drafts are expected to take place next week. Practices begin shortly after and games start in mid-April. Those signed up after the Sunday's deadline are placed on a waiting list and charged a $10 late fee.
To offset the cost of the league, all participants are given 10 discount cards to sell for $10 apiece. Families get to keep the money received for the discount cards. Discount cards will be distributed on picture day in early May.
Participants play in one of six leagues based on their age, T-Ball (3-5), Junior Rookie (5-6), Senior Rookie (7-8), Junior (9-10), Senior (11-12) and Babe Ruth (13-15). Five-year-olds have the option of playing T-Ball or Junior Rookie League, but are strongly encouraged to have played at least one year of T-Ball.
Apart from Saturday, all other registration is being done on the league website, www.vincennescubleague.com.
