The Vincennes University women’s basketball team was ready to go in the postseason and didn’t wait around for Shawnee (Ill.) in the Region 24 quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Freshman Amani Brown scored a career-high 27 points to go with eight assists and six steals, and the honorable mention Lady Trailblazers scored the game’s first nine points, ended the first half with a 22-point run and bombed the Saints, 107-45, at the P.E. Complex.

VU (27-4) had four double-figure scorers in clearing 100 points for the 10th time this season and the fifth time in the last eight games. Jhala Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 23, Jaynice Stovall contributed 18 points with nine steals and Elena Chamarro added 12. Fess Hawkins scored all nine of her points in the first quarter and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The victory advances second-seeded VU to Thursday’s 8 p.m. semifinal in Ina, Ill., against the winner of sixth-seeded John A. Logan (10-17) and tournament host, third-seeded Rend Lake (16-14).

After falling into a 19-4 hole, seventh-seeded Shawnee righted itself. The deficit was 26-13 after one quarter, and the Saints were still in it at 33-19 in the second quarter. But VU’s press and Brown’s shooting took over for the remainder of the quarter. The freshman guard had 11 second-quarter points, including three of her five 3-pointers, and VU stormed into halftime with a 55-19 advantage.

Stovall’s three-point play started the second half, allowing the Blazers to extend the spurt to 25 before the Saints scored again. VU didn’t let up, building a 87-29 bulge after three quarters. Henry tallied 13 in the stanza.

It was the third time the Blazers defeated Shawnee this season, but it was by far the most decisive. VU collected a 75-43 triumph in Vincennes on Jan. 11 and an 85-54 win at Shawnee on Feb. 22.

Breon Oldham was the only double-figure scorer for the Saints (13-15) with 12 points.
